Chapter 7: Is This Goodbye?

The week flew by and it was already Friday night. After my shift ended tonight I had the whole weekend off to spend with Al. He wouldn’t tell me what he had planned, but I knew it’d be fun. Ever since the cops came by looking for Jake a while back, he hasn’t been seen or heard from. I must admit that after getting everything off my chest, I’ve been even happier without seeing him.

“Bye, Cindy. Bye, Alisha, I’ll see you guys next week!”

“Enjoy your weekend, Alecia.” Cindy said.

I left my cell phone charging in the car during my shift; otherwise, it would have sat in my locker collecting dust because Cindy doesn’t allow electronic devices on the floor. I unplugged it and played the voicemail Al left. “Hey Ice, I know you’re at work but I have some interesting news to tell you.” Eager to find out what the news was I called him right back.

“Hey, what’s going Al?”

“I need you to get here as soon as you can.”

“Damn is it that bad?”

“No, but you won’t be happy, just get here okay?”

45 minutes later, I stepped outside of my car, a bundle of nerves, anticipating what Allan might tell me. He met me in front of the hood and walked me back inside to his room.

“I’m not gonna sugar coat this, Ice. My manager, Trevor, called me earlier about a new position and I took it.”

“That’s great news!”

“Not exactly, the job is in San Diego.”

“California?”

“Yeah.”

“How long will you be gone?”

“Six to eight months.”

“Six to eight months? What the hell am I supposed to do without you? Will you at least come back to visit?”

“Not until the job is finished. It’s a potential temp to perm position. If I get hired permanently, I’ll have to stay in Cali for good.”

“I’ll come with you.”

“You can’t do that, Alecia. You have to stay here and finish school. Plus you have a decent job here.”

“When do you leave?”

“Tomorrow.”

I reached back and slapped him clear across his face. The red imprint of my hand remained on his cheek long after my hand had passed.

“So, you drop this bullshit on me today and you have to leave tomorrow? I barely even have time to say goodbye!”

“Ice...” he said, while extending his hand to grab mine.

“Don’t touch me!” He didn’t heed my warning and pulled me to his chest, tightly wrapping his arms around my torso.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’ll always love you, Ice, and maybe once you’re done with school, or are on vacation you can come and be with me.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

While wiping the tears away from my cheeks, he walked me over to his bed.

“Have a seat, since this is the last night I get to fuck you, I’m gonna make it a night to remember. Close your eyes.”

He dropped a paper bag next to me and placed a soft silken mask over my eyes.

“Now, lay down.”

I couldn’t see a thing, but I made sure I listened to his every command.
